Dr Patel commenced training in Cardiology in 1997 on the South East Thames Training Scheme having qualified from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1992. He is currently in clinical training primarily subspecialisng in interventional cardiology under the supervision of Dr S Redwood (Senior Lecturer and Consultant Interventional Cardiologist).

He spent 2 years in full time clinical research between 2001 and 2003 at St Thomas ' Hospital under the supervision of Dr Redwood and Professor P Chowienczyk (Professor of Clinical Pharmacology). The principal aim of this project was to investigate and describe the relationship between aortic stiffness, a powerful predictor of cardiovascular risk, and coronary artery stiffness. The project was funded by a Personal Clinical Training Fellowship awarded by the Guy's and St Thomas ' Charitable Foundation. Some of the preliminary data have been presented at international meetings in abstract form (the AHA, ACC and TCT Scientific Sessions). The project is being prepared for submission as an MD thesis to the University of London .

Ongoing interests are related to the field of interventional cardiology in particular the management of vein graft disease and peri-procedural risk assessment.
