Intra-aortic balloon pump trial
Intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP) enhance coronary perfusion by augmenting diastolic pressure and improve cardiac output by reducing afterload. When used in patients with haemodynamic compromise (cardiogenic shock) they have been shown to reduce mortality and morbidity. Prophylactic IABP insertion before high-risk PCI may also reduce complications. We have recently initiated a multicentre, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of elective IABP use in high risk PCI.
In addition, the unit is involved in a number of multi-centre trials including CARDia, OAT, PAMI-Senior and FINESSE.
