Shahzad qualified from the University Of Birmingham in 1997. He undertook most of his SHO training at Guys and St Thomas ' hospitals. He was appointed as an SpR in Cardiology in 2001 in the Oxford Deanery, where he rotated between the John Radcliffe Hospital , Oxford and Battle Hospital in Reading .

In 2004 He was awarded a BHF Junior Research Fellowship and commenced research at St Thomas ' hospital and Kings College London in January 2005 under the supervision of Professor Phil Chowienczyk, Dr Simon Redwood and Professor Mike Marber.

The area of research is in the mechanisms of arterial waveform changes seen following exercise, in health and in patients with ischaemic heart disease, using invasive and non-invasive arterial waveform analysis techniques.

Clinical interests include coronary intervention.
